5 Windows XP Tips That Sometimes Become Very Useful

April 15th, 2008 | 10 Comments | Posted in Tips & Tricks

1. Access Websites Without Typing In The Browser’s URL
From the Start menu in the run window, you can type for a web address instead of typing in the browser.

2. Select All
Ctrl+A lets you select all thats on a page.

3. Put Your Own Icons For Your Folders
Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>Paint>image>Attributes. In this window, type 32 in both the Width anfd Height boxes and select Pixels under the Units section. In this way, you make an icon size document. Have a brush art, use pencil or air brush whatever you want to create one for you or open up one to edit as you like. Save the file as an icon by typing .ico after the name, for example for a file named ‘abc’ you will type ‘abc.ico’. Go to the properties of the folder that you want to change the icon of. Under the Customize tab, click Change Icon button, under the Folder icons section. Browse for the icon that you have just saved.

4. Display Two Equally Enlarged Windows Side By Side On The Desktop
In the taskbar where you have your Windows’ buttons, click on any one of them, press the Ctrl key and hold it and right click on the other Window button. You will see options of Horizontally and Vertically Tiling, click one of them which you like.

5. Reach The Desktop In A Hurry With The Keyboard

You want to reach the desktop but there are many windows in front of you to minimize them first, here are the keys that keep you ’safe’ from this minimizing job. There are two combinations of keys to press one and then other. First press Ctrl+Esc, realease them, then press Alt+M.
Note: Tested on Windows XP Professional Edition.

Ever wanna know that how many of your friends are on your favorite social networking site but can’t find the way to do so? Now with spokeo, you can know about anyone’s online social activities if he/she is in your email address book.

Spokeo is a social networking aggregator that will search what your friends are doing across the web. It supports more than 30 services including Digg, Blogger, Amazon, Stumbleupon, DeviantART, Youtube, LinkedIn and other well known sites. One misconception among people who know spokeo is that it is a social networking site, which it is not. It is just an aggregator which collects information about your contacts and thats all. In order to use it, you just have to provide your email address, password and Voila!, all your friends secrets get revealed. If you are a social maniac or a detective, in either case its Worth a try. Here is a video link on Youtube which I think you may wanna watch (I am not embedding the video here because it ruins the page layout).

Make that loooooooong URL short in Firefox.

December 30th, 2007 | 2 Comments | Posted in Tips & Tricks

longest-domain-name.jpg

Look at this:

http://www.llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch.com/

And this:

http://tinyurl.com/16gu

Which one is easy to remember? {I know some of you might also say the first option :P}

You will not choose the first one because you:

  • Can’t tell others the address of a website
  • You can’t remember this {Unless you are a Π champion}
  • In most of the cases, long Urls are not search engine friendly
  • You are not in a mood to break their record :D {They are claiming to have the longest URL in the world!}

OK enough talk and lets come to the point.

If you like to make URLs as short as you can, then do this from now with a few clicks and use tinyurl add-on for Firefox, because with this add-on, you don’t have to goto their homepage to convert long URL’s in short. You can add this feature in the right click menu of Firefox. By this add-on, you can not only create memorable URL’s, but can also visit later those Urls you have created.

Follow the steps below to know how to use this useful extension.

1-First of all, goto download page and then download the TinyUrl extension.

2-Click on the link or, if not clickable, select a link then right click and choose

“CreateTinyUrl for this Page”

longest-url.png

3-A dialog box appears like this

dialog-box.png

4-Save the Url

url-2.png

5-Then Goto Tools–>TinyUrl Creator–>View Saved to view your saved Urls

6-Your saved Urls will be there to Copy,Edit or Remove

saved urls

7-Done!

Hope that now you will use TinyUrl for all your “Url Compressing” needs and never complain again that why somebody gave you that long Url over IM because you know the solution for it. Right? :)
