Yesterday, I along with my class mate, gave a presentation about Nanotechnology at my institute. Although the topic is not very new or a unique one, but the presentation was not copied from any source, and was made by me and my friend in 4 days.

After the presentation, I uploaded it to two different sites Slideshare and Scribd, the only two I know about this type of material.

If you want to download a copy of it, you can do so from here or here. The material you would get could be helpful for getting an idea about how to make a presentation, how to write notes for the slides and things like that. Below you can see the presentation embedded from Slideshare.

Naturally, as may be expected from one like me going to have hands-on with his very first Notebook, I was very excited too to get my machine out of its box, before which I took some shots of to fulfill my little wish of making that moment a memorable one. Here they are.

I installed Ubuntu and XP side by side, by installing Ubuntu under windows XP with Wubi. It deserves to be told to you that Ubuntu picked up and was running in no time with all the drivers working, had power setting optimized by default etc. While in XP, I had to go through all the ‘this n that’s manually. And the touch scroll also doesn’t work in XP.

With its 1280×800 WXGA display, I can open a Firefox window side by side with another window of either Windows Explorer, Gtalk or Net Meeting etc. I have my browser resized to approx 1024×768 resolution (which i am used to).

Sound and graphics are good, but the sound gets a little choppy when set to max and played on internal speaker. However, I listen to music with headphones usually, in which the sound works great.

Although I’ve got a drivers CD from the shop where I bought the laptop i.e. Galaxy.pk, but there were mistakenly some wrong Audio and Bluetooth drivers in that CD. But thanks to the official HP site took me out of this problem. After some initial struggle with laptop settings and functions now I am running it with great peace of mind.

And last but the very good thing for me is the battery time which is officially announced to be 2.5 hours, which with little adjustments, can be extendable to nearly 3.5 hours. Which is good if not great for anyone who lives in a city like Karachi.

I will recommend buying this laptop to anyone having limited cash in his/her pocket, and who wants nothing less than the great Core2Duo.

1. Grab these images I got from Stock.Xchng {The leading Free Stock Images Site} and Google Images {Click for full size view}.

2. Put both of the images in Photoshop and transform the second image vertically {to fit in the first one}.

3. When both of them are in separate layers. Give ‘old paper’ Layer the ‘Overlay’ effect and the ‘Hard Light’ effect to the ‘Guards Layer’.

3. Tada!

This is just one technique…you can try experimenting with different available effects to get unlimited artistic styles .

I know that you may have some argues that what Blackle does that Google doesn’t? It is that it shows the totally black User Interface which consumes 59 watts and on the other side, white Google page consumes 74 watts and by using Blackle for one hour, we can merely save 15 watts per hour and if everybody on earth would start using Blackle for their searching needs, then it could save 8.3 Megawatts/day and 750-Megawatt/year energy which is hell a lot. OK then stop reading this and set Blackle as your default and preferred search engine.

I am worried that if people would start thinking seriously about using everything black instead of white, where would the US President live

It would only be effective for CRT monitors. So in conclusion: Stop mindlessly repeating hype dammit!

I bet using Blackle will use more power because of the extra set of servers needed to be running, and the extra net bandwidth, hence more network infrastructure hardware needed. This all uses a lot of power. I'll go as far to say if you alone where to remove all your content off of the web, and if you would turn off your computer, more energy would be save then if every one in the world started to use Blackle instead.

This friendship which had started with Dell’s decision to adopt AMD’s chips in it’s desktops and laptops in the second quarter of 2006, now is going to be ruined again with Dell’s decision to stop making such systems with AMDs in them. Only a few of Dell’s AMD-powered systems are available for online purchasing and buyers of these systems are told by Dell to move to retail stores. Bad luck for AMD has not ended yet after a troubled year of 2007 due to Barcelona and Phenom issues.

As you may have noticed, Google is trying to becoming very social by changing Google logo to different doodles. Be it Christmas, TCP/IP Birthday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, or any other big event, Google takes advantage of it and ‘apply’ these events to its logo. Today, It has changed its logo to Lego brick type doodle. No doubt, Lego bricking is an all-time favorite activity for kids. I also used to build some Lego projects in my childhood and I loved it!
