Morph: Nokia’s revolutionary concept phone

February 26th, 2008 Posted in Gadgets

Nokia research centre (NRC) unveiled its new concept phone named Morph in collaboration with university of Cambridge Nanoscience Center(UK). Its a joint nanotechnology concept with endless possibilities and magical capabilities. It is the next generation phone which can do so many wonderful things like no other portable device can. It has been featured today in The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) “Design and The Elastic Mind” exhibition (which is going on from February 24 to May 12, 2008,) in New York.

Features:

This concept phone as I have previously said, can do wonders and may create fantastic opportunities for portable world such as:

  • It is very flexible and will blend seamlessly with our normal life with the stretchable silicon built into it.
  • It can clean itself automatically from dust, liquids and even fingerprints with its Super hydrophobic “Nanoflowers”.
  • With a solar charging option through “Nanograss”, it has proved itself to be a hardcore environment friendly.
  • Is the apple I am buying washed and hygienic? Is the air I am breathing in is free from germs? You would be able to ask these type of questions from the morph which will be answered with the help of its Integrated sensors which would enable us to choose the thing which would be best for our environment and ultimately for ourselves.
  • One more thing, it would have transparent greenish type electronics, meaning you could see through it. Amazing isn’t it?

In addition to the features I have written above, it would have one more feature which is more functionality in less cost and space. All of these new capabilities will unleash new horizons to communicate and interact in unprecedented ways.

It could be transformed in various types of shapes according to one’s needs including:
Standard mode: Just like any normal handset.
Landscape mode: In this mode, It could analyze things with its nanosensors in great detail. Just like the apple example I gave above.
Bracelet mode: Wrist up the phone around your hand just like a watch as you might have seen in some sci-fi movie.

How this all works?

According to nokia.com

Nanotechnology enables materials and components that are flexible, stretchable, transparent and remarkably strong. Fibril proteins are woven into a three dimensional mesh that reinforces thin elastic structures. Using the same principle behind spider silk, this elasticity enables the device to literally change shapes and configure itself to adapt to the task at hand.

Comments from the authoritys:

Dr. Tapani Ryhanen, Head of the NRC Cambridge UK laboratory said:

We hope that this combination of art and science will showcase the potential of nanoscience to a wider audience. The research we are carrying out is fundamental to this as we seek a safe and controlled way to develop and use new materials.

Dr. Bob Iannucci, Chief Technology Officer, Nokia, told:

Nokia Research Center is looking at ways to reinvent the form and function of mobile devices; the Morph concept shows what might be possible.

Professor Mark Welland, Head of the Department of Engineering’s Nanoscience Group at the University of Cambridge and University Director of Nokia-Cambridge collaboration mentioned:

Developing the Morph concept with Nokia has provided us with a focus that is both artistically inspirational but, more importantly, sets the technology agenda for our joint nanoscience research that will stimulate our future work together.

The partnership between Nokia and the University of Cambridge started in March, 2007 in result of an agreement to work together on research projects. Nokia has established its research center branch at the West site of Cambridge university and aimed to collaborate with several departments functioning of which has started from the Nanoscience Center and Electrical Division of the Engineering Department with projects centered on nanotechnology.

To see morph in action, we have to wait at least 7 years, because the concept shown here is easy to see, but not that easy to build and thats why in the beginning, it may cost much but would likely reach the pockets of people after taking some time when nanotechnology will grow up from its infancy.

See the video also and decide for yourself whether it is a revolutionary concept or not.

  1. Joseph Harris Says:

If the person who wrote this entry is not a native English speaker, then please read no further. It is not my point to criticize anyone who has English as a second language.

To accept the writing from someone for whom English is a primary language, however, raises the question of credibility of the information and the informer.

This entry contains so many poorly structured sentences that lead to ambiguity of meaning, so many “small” mistakes, such a lack of proper capitalization, missing or redundant punctuation, word misuse and run-on sentences that lose connection with their initial point, that the reader wonders if the writer truly understands the subject or is simply parroting set phrases.

My impression is that the writer is not adequately educated in English and therefore not qualified to represent such a prestigious client as Nokia, especially in the introduction of new and exciting technology, where clarity and quality of language is essential to attracting customers.

Writing conveys more than information about a product; it also characterizes the writer. How he writes reflects well or poorly on himself and by association, his client.

  2. canvasch Says:

    Joseph Harris is a dick.
Nice article, in seven years I’m going to get one of these, BELIEVE IT!

  3. ewan quirk Says:

    …but a properly educated dick.
Nice article, in 7.5 years I’ll be buying one for one quadrillionth the price you paid for yours, BELIEVE IT!

  4. Eximus Says:

This will not happen in seven years. Nor will it happen in ten years. Nanotechnology has yet to overcome some serious manufacturing issues, and even more on a factory-level production scale.
I see someone getting one of these in fifteen years (at most) if they donate money to R&D substantial enough to feed the world’s hungry and cure the world’s sick…
Actually, just mail the money to pharmacology research and genetic engineering.

  5. admin Says:

Thanx to those who liked and disliked the post. And hey harris, I m not a native English speaker and thats why writing on my own blog, not on the PCWorld and PCMag types of magazines. I am constantly trying to improve my English and one day you will see me there…. :)

  6. ay0 Says:

    so…. lets dance

  7. lol Says:

yah harris fuck you and your mac

  8. esvl Says:

Dude? Joseph Harris please show me one person except yourself that cares about the exact spelling. Use your imagination. Even if someone did care why would they write a theses about how to spell correctly, just close your browser if you cant handle the imperfection of reality and the fact that not everyone is from America. You are probably one of those people that get annoyed by the fact that there are other countries in the world speaking other languages and that they to have internet access. Well guess what, there are more people on the internet that do not speak english than those that do. And you can be glad people still use this stupid language called english.

This was a great post and I liked it.

And here is to Joseph Harris: Jy is so n poepol, dink jy enige iemand gee om wat jy het om te se oor enige iemand se spelling?

  9. Jon Says:

I agree with him. And likewise, I don’t think it’s right to penalize someone who’s second language is English, but when you’re going to try and publish something, it’s actually really key to be able to make unambiguous statements, and proper sentences. If you disagree with me, you’re going to have to find an employer with the same ideas as you.

  10. Bob Marley Says:

I think you guys are hatin on the poor guy. He said he didn’t mean it if the admin was not a native english speaker.

  11. Jon Says:

I’d like to add, though, that out of all the people I’ve seen on the internet out of that middle-eastern-ish part of the world that the admin seems to be from, he’s got the best english, and I applaud his ethic for a language that isn’t even his native.

  12. anon Says:

    Battery

  13. anti-anon Says:

anon: NANO battery’s :P and solar power
I liked the post, and people, don’t flame Joseph, whe should all aim for perfection. I’m dutch and dyslexic (No, I don’t know the proper spelling for that) but I’m doing the best I can to improve my English. Whe NEED people like Joseph, see it like a part of evolution.
Back on topic: I think seven years is resonable, try googling or stubling for nano’s. We are getting better at making, and controlling, the tech. and with the computerpower that whe’ll have in five years things could go pretty fast.

    (imho)

  14. deadstatue Says:

    cool concept design,
and i think i agree with joseph harris.
hes not bashing anyone for the lack of english they speak, hes just saying that a global corporation like nokia, should at least choose somebody that speaks fluent english to demo or report about a product like this in english.
after taking 4 years of spanish, i wouldnt be mad if my company chose someone that natively spoke spanish to report about a product to a hispanic demographic.
either way, i call 7 years a very optimistic outlook.

  15. yuffles Says:

deadstatue, go use a real browser like firefox. then return with your comments.

  16. Rob Hyde Says:

Absolutely beautiful design. Can’t wait to see more pictures and read more information.

Also, it’s funny to see people bitching about peoples’ operating systems and browser choices here… Also, the whole Harris debate - sure grammar and punctuation are great and needed, especially in the land of the internet, but you don’t need to make a song and dance about it…

  17. James Says:

Nice leach for your wallet,it already looks like a credit card. costs me nothing to talk to someone in person, with super graphics too ahahaha.

  18. Daily Tech Impressions Says:

Nokia is very innovative with their new Technologies and applying them to their handsets

  19. UMair Says:

    Assalamualaikum……….

    gud going man…..

  20. admin Says:

Thanx……Its all bcoz of you, the readers of nazjam…..

  21. mayank Says:

    Nice article dood…
nice to see someone posting good from my neighbour country

  22. This is so old... and fake Says:

We’ve seen this before. It’s a well known hoax by now.

  23. Kaspar Silas Says:

I personally would have much more issue with someone of Joseph Harris opinions representing my research department. I would much prefer to have someone who knows about the product than who had perfect grammar. By valuing style and presentation over all else I knew he was apple man before I noticed the apple icon.

  24. Kartik Shashank Says:

    Hi friends…
I really loved the Nokia Morph concept. I am not good at English, and felt admitting this necessary. But anyway, keeping all the issues discussed above, about the language problems, aside, I congratulate the ADMINISTRATOR for the wonderful description of the Concept yet in the making. But I couldn’t understand, what made some of you say that this concept shall take 7 years. I mean, why specifically SEVEN?

  25. Kartik Shashank Says:

And all the Best for further works!!!

  26. Treeman Says:

Nice concept, maybe 1 day eh… thats if the world doesn’t end in 2012??? (probably caused by nano tech!!!)

As for the Joseph issue, he’s a yank (no offence to others) and i’m English! The language is called English for a fucking reason, not fucking american!!! Whats more, this so called English language that you speak so well in America has several words with different spellings than “true English” (colour/color)

Anyway, English is my only language and i’m not that great at that, all I can say is that I tilt my hat to those who take the time to learn other languages and not mock those who are trying!!! How many languages can Joseph speak fluently?

  27. buckykat Says:

morph: it will make you win at everything forever and turn into a god. it will also stop world hunger, cure cancer, aids, and ebola, as well as stopping global warming. with it, you will be smarter than macgyver and be able to fight off captain kirk, mr. t, and chuck norris at once.

  28. TAPAS Says:

Nokia is not an english name - if u don’t understand technology shut up !

  29. Vineet Says:

ROFL. I stumbled here and I already knew about the nokia phone. But watching you guys crap on Joseph “delusions of grandeur” Harris is totally funny. Thumbs up.

  30. Nicholas Francis Says:

hey Mr.Joseph harris, I guess u need to go back to english Teacher to learn to read better”english”.. Or may be becoz ur spending too much time on the internet that may have damaged ur eyes, which makes u read badly(do chk a doctor).Come on Mr.Harris, Learn to appreciate talent, i think ur jealous of Nasir.. so ur trying to bring his fame down by writing such Stupid comments.. which will never happen.

  31. Robert Says:

    Mr. Harris,

Avoid writing in the passive voice and you will become a good writer. Be direct and to the point, man. Don’t pussy foot around with words. Learn to be effective. This is the Internet. Web 2.0 is here. Get with it or be silent!

  32. Vineet Says:

Does an I-mac automatically make people into pretentious losers who behave like a$$holes to everyone else?

  33. Harshil Zaveri Says:

    Wonderful article!

I found the link to the official morph page on Nokia.com

    http://www.nokia.com/A4852062

Hard to imagine how fast technology is evolving!

  34. rajeev Says:

hi its amazing concept. i think i should have this, so please let me know when its going to be available with price tag. also send the complete specifications of nokia morph

  35. saikaku Says:

Vineet, I totally agree with your first post. This is making me ROFL.

  36. sam Says:

    this concept looks interesting
cool gadget and a must have
    oh and harris PISS OFF!!
    you sound like my professor
    you wanker!

  37. issac Says:

    John Harris
    is a DICK!!

    nice article!

  38. Pieter Says:

Attention Mr Joseph Harris. I have contacted the Gay Mafia to seek out this butcher of our sacred language and they are going to forcibly redecorate his or her apartment in last years colours and add some shag carpet and place drinks on the coffee table without coasters. Resistance will be met with a vicious attack with teasing combs and nail files. This should teach this barbarian to stay away from English and possibly start going out to gay bars… Revenge shal be ours Mr Harris.
May God, who is an Englishman after all bless you and give you the strength to continue this just quest to preserve the queen’s English. Millions everywhere love you now and I shall name my next Barbie doll in your honour.
Your servant and grateful admirer, Pieter

    Kissy kissy….. hugsie wugsie…..

  39. Cool Acid Says:

Hahaha… leave John Harris alone… it’s not his fault to be a dick. Also, people like us, not-english-speakers need that kind of “wise” critic to improve our english.
Cool concept… but I think it’ll happen in more than 7 years. And… why the fuck do you wanna know if things are clean in a microscopic level? You’ll end up not eating anything and stop touching things because you will just get so paranoid about the bacterias and stuff that you will live terrified the rest of your high-tech-nano-life.

  40. Pieter Says:

In the future we will have robots that touch these things for us. As a bonus they will check everything we write as well. No more dangling participles, terrible grammar or embarrassing spelling mistakes. The robots will get the blame for all our shortcomings. Mr Harris is probably a robot just like that and he morphs into other things like a dickhead, a wanker and even a loser. I morph too from loyal supporter into a vicious bitch. I am sendinng him a glitter bomb. That stuff sticks to the skin forever. He is a marked man.
I am now officially sick of this entire topic. Go to hell Harris. Outta here………….

  41. Bryan Duke Says:

    Nice post, thankyou.

I’d also like to add that it was obvious the poster did not have english as his first language, so the post by Jo Harris is condenscending in tone despite his disclaimer at the beginning.

Anyone with a strong grasp of english like Jo could have identified this so Jo’s failure to do so probably highlights some sort of isolation from the world either physically or emotionally.

Be nice Jo. You are not your father.

  42. Kartik Shashank Says:

Hello people… It is really nice to see so many people supporting the right person. Infact, if your words are able to convey your ideas in any way, there is no point crying for the grammatical correctness.

Well, now I just want to talk about the phone.
    1) People, I really want to know, why specifically some of you have talked of 7 years.
    2) A friend of mine just told me that such CONCEPT phones are just meant to show the abilities of the company, and do not assure to come to existence in the near future. Is that really true?

  43. Symbiotes_021 Says:

Wauuu.. I can see the future now… Really neat technology they (NOKIA) got there.
